The presidents of America and Russia have met and agreed to work together on mutual interests—but apart on unresolved issues. Pundits in America wonder how far these two rivals will go toward a marriage made in heaven, to prevent world war—even lesser wars—and prevent, as well, nuclear proliferation, global poverty, climate change, and domination by nations with more than three times their population and a potential for more than three times their units of industrial production. Some say Russia has the option to look east to China, even India, or west to Europe and America, maybe even including Japan. Geography appeals to them because it is so easily seen and measured; (they do remember that all borders invite annexation as much as they may separate good neighbors. ) Others say Russia will look for ideological affinity, and authoritarianism will be its name. American pluralism will not have great appeal. Still others say nations, like Russia, America and the rest, look to immediate advantage (military and economic) in the now and within a medium term horizon. Were they to marry who would be boss? Can all issues be resolved by attention to detail and belief in the Golden Rule? If poverty is a shame, what defines prosperity—and how far toward both national and individual equality must modern man travel to get off the road to self-destruction? Can America and Russia invite Europe, China, India and Brazil to join a new United Nations police (open to additional partners if practical) with the power to prevent science from arming crazy people who would die for the chance to be famous for one second before the end? |
